Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has been re-elected as President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) following a commanding win in the Association’s national elections held on Monday, June 30.
Dwumfuor, who first assumed the presidency in 2022, garnered 445 votes, representing 64.49% of the total ballots cast, comfortably defeating his main challenger, Charles Yao Mawusi, who polled 245 votes (35.51%).
Over 800 accredited members of the Association voted across designated regional centres nationwide. The elections, organized and supervised by the GJA Elections Committee, aimed to elect six national executive officers and multiple regional representatives to lead the Association for the next three years.
In a statement after his victory, Dwumfuor expressed gratitude to members for their confidence and pledged to consolidate gains made during his first term while initiating fresh reforms. “This mandate is a call to deepen our advocacy for media freedoms, professional ethics, and better working conditions for journalists,” he stated.

Rebecca Ekpe of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) was elected Vice President, defeating Mary Mensah of the Graphic Communications Group. Ekpe previously served as the Association’s Public Affairs Officer.

Suleiman Mustapha, a senior journalist with the Graphic Communications Group, emerged as Organising Secretary.

Zadok Kwame Gyesi clinched the position of Public Affairs Officer.
In all, 12 candidates contested the national executive positions, with 49 others vying for various regional roles.

As the newly elected leadership prepares to take office, members and media stakeholders are looking ahead to a period of continuity, renewal, and renewed momentum in addressing the evolving challenges within Ghana’s media landscape.
