The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended its planned 20% increase in public transport fares, following a crucial meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
The move follows mounting public backlash and criticism over the lack of extensive stakeholder consultations prior to the announcement of the fare adjustment.
Earlier, on Tuesday, August 5, Road Transport Operators had declared a nationwide 20% hike in fares, set to take effect from Friday, August 8. The increase—aligned with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares—was expected to impact shared taxis, trotros (intra-city buses), long-distance travel, and haulage services.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, the transport union confirmed that the fare hike has been shelved after deliberations with the Ministry. The union cited inadequate stakeholder engagement as a key reason for the suspension.
“Transport Operators have agreed to suspend the purported 20% increment in public transport fares as a result of the lack of broader consultations on the decision,” the statement said.
In the interim, all transport operators have been instructed to strictly maintain the existing 15% fare reduction, which has been in place since May 24, 2025.
